So, what is the Men’s Work that we are doing here at Sunrise Journeys? We see this work as a journey of wellness and discovery for men. Here is an overview:
One part of the journey is Introspection. First, by seeking answers to fundamental questions about ourselves: Who am I? Why am I here? What is my purpose? What matters to me? Who do I want to be? But also facing our challenges: What are my roadblocks? What thoughts and beliefs no longer serve me, are blocking my way, and are holding me back? Are those thoughts and beliefs absolutely true?
Another component of the journey is Integrative Wellness, which is where we introduce Dr. Rebecca Shisler Marshall’s framework of the Five Wellness Bodies: physical, mental, emotional, energetic, and spiritual aspects of ourselves that all interact and integrate with each other to determine the degrees of health, wellness, and wholeness we experience. Checking in with ourselves through the application of the Five Wellness Bodies can dramatically shift the quality of our wellness and life experience.
A third component of the journey of wellness and discovery for men is addressing The Mask of Masculinity that we all wear; a mask we have adopted, adapted, and inherited from all of our exposures and experiences in our lives—from family, school, religion, television and movies, advertising, and our society in general. Every one of us receives messages from the patriarchal systems in which we live and breathe, about what is expected of a man and of a woman, and how differently each can and should be treated and regarded. The exposure and expectations we feel are directly related to the mask we wear. It is a mask that is the opposite of freedom, and it negatively affects the health and wellness in all five of the Wellness Bodies.
A fourth component of Men’s Work at Sunrise Journeys is to Shift Perspective, in order to gain more insights: to look at ourselves in both an inwardly and outwardly direction. Some questions in the inward direction: What do I think of myself? Do I like myself? How connected am I to my whole self? And questions outwardly: How connected am I to others? What is my connection with the world around me?
The goals of this work are fairly simple and pretty big: to improve the quality of your life, your health, your relationships, and your impact on the world.
