In my last post, I offered some tips and prompts for reflection and intention-setting for the new year. I ended the post with this question: What is one thing you can change now to move you toward that trajectory?
This is, of course, a foundational question for any journey we wish to undertake, any prospect of transformation or growth. In between where we are and where we aim to go, there is an enormous amount of potential. To unleash that potential, we must begin to move, change, and grow.
So, do you know that one thing that you can start with today? This is where a small, doable step has a much greater chance of being actualized than a grand but overwhelming leap.
I mean, if all it took was you picking your direction and that big first step, you’d already be well on your way. But you aren’t. And I don’t believe it’s because you haven’t wanted it badly enough or worked hard enough, or that you haven’t earned it, or you don’t deserve it.
The reality is that even though we may be excited and want to make a lot of forward progress in a hurry, big changes when we are just beginning can set off alarms of discomfort and vulnerability that make us subconsciously pull the reins to slow things down.
In physics, there’s a phenomenon that it takes more energy to get an object at rest to begin moving than it takes to keep it moving. Inertia needs to be overcome. We are similar. In many ways, taking your first step, going from zero to one, will be the hardest.
Knowing this, it is more powerful to focus your enthusiasm and excitement into overcoming your inertia, rather than aiming for a huge leap forward. Plan your zero-to-one small step, set yourself up for success, and get yourself started.
This is just one reason you may feel stuck or find yourself struggling to get started. Even more important than choosing your direction or even your first action, the question what is getting in the way can uncover rewarding insights. It may even uncover a pattern or behavior that sheds light on why you have often struggled or felt stuck in the past when trying to create change.
One of the reasons for working with a coach is to gain an objective perspective when stumbles and roadblocks come up. Too often, we blame ourselves, and think we need to just push harder to get somewhere. A coach brings a fresh perspective and no agenda, so can often spot something so ingrained or believed by us that we don’t even see it. The coach also creates accountability, brings encouragement, and reminds us to celebrate our successes.Let’s make this your year of change and transformation! Reserve your first session now!
